Going from a Class C motorhome to Class A

RVers who have owned Class C motorhomes may wonder what’s so different about a Class A. The most obvious answer is length. But, how does that translate to a different camping experience?

Most notably, it allows for floorplans with bathrooms, kitchens, bedrooms and living areas in Class As that rival some small brick and mortar homes. Class C motorhomes are also distinguished by the bunk area over the cab, which you don’t typically see on a Class A.

But, that’s just the start. Let’s take a look at some of the other key factors you may want to consider if you’re thinking about upsizing your motorhome.

The driving experience

Class A motorhomes naturally make for a different driving experience. Being elevated above other traffic along with panoramic windshields give drivers and passengers alike the kind of sightlines they rarely get to experience. Not only is taking in the scenery one of the great joys of owning a Class A, but the view of traffic, road signs and exits ahead help make navigating easier too.

At Jayco, we take great pride in how all of our motorized RVs perform on the road. It’s why we’ve researched and invested in equipping all of our motorhomes with unmatched ride and handling equipment—literally the kind of components you find on race cars and high-end luxury vehicles.

We call this exclusive package of ride and handling features JRide. Learn more in this quick video.

Class A motorhomes make enjoying all kinds of adventures a little easier. With abundant storage, accessed from both inside and out, you’ll have the opportunity to bring more gear, a bigger wardrobe and accommodate more friends and family who want to join in the fun. For example, our Class A motorhomes are built with pass-through storage under the floor with lockable Slam-latch™ doors for easy loading and unloading from either side of the unit.

Towing capacity
Class C motorhomes are often best for towing compact cars. Class A motorhomes, on the other hand, are built on the same rugged chassis as buses and trucks with hitches that can handle SUVs or even large boats up to 5,000 pounds. With the ability to travel with a larger variety of vehicles in tow, you’ll have the chance to uncover the most scenic spots, off-the-beaten-path nooks and fishing holes of your favorite destinations once your RV is settled at camp, affording campers the chance for a lot of variety in a trip.

If you couldn’t imagine leaving your furry friends behind, Class A motorhomes provide a much more comfortable way to bring them along. More space means they can surely find a comfy spot to curl up even if your camping crew is on the larger side.

Interior versatility
In a Class A motorhome you’ll find that with different kinds of spaces people will be able to work, watch a movie, play cards or sleep without disruption. The versatile spaces, additional privacy, or a more open, social setup that’s great for big families or hosting your friendly campground neighbors.

There is actually some overlap between the two classes in terms of price—the less expensive Class As can cost about the same as more expensive Class Cs. And while Class Cs will use less gas, you’ll probably be pleasantly surprised how comparable the two categories generally are. And with diesel Class As, buyers have more options to choose from when it comes to fuel efficiency.

Campsites for large Class As will cost you more and you may come across some campgrounds that can’t accommodate the big rigs. And with driving area configurations, like cab-forward design, builders are afforded the opportunity for more efficient design of the living area.

We highly recommend you consult a dealer if you’re considering making the move from Class C to Class A—they’re there to help. Since they have the opportunity to work so closely with customers looking for bigger—and smaller—RVs they’ll quickly be able to answer the questions that apply to your unique camping and travel style.
