Towing RVs

Jayco Jay Flight Swift SLX Tow PhotoTowing an RV can be scary the first go around, there’s a lot to think about. There are all those abbreviations and foreign terms to understand and learning how to maneuver it can be a challenge in itself, but once you get the hang of it, towing an RV really isn’t all that bad. Knowing the terms and understanding them is an important part element in learning how to properly tow an RV. We’re here to define some of those terms in hopes that we can alleviate some of the stress.

Gross Combination Weight Rating (GCWR) – the total allowable weight of the tow vehicle including the trailer, the cargo in each, the hitch hardware, fluids and occupants.

Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) – the total allowable weight for the vehicle, including the occupants, fluids, options, hitch hardware, cargo and trailer-hitch weight.

Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR) – the total allowable weight on an individual axle, including the weight of the tires, wheels, brakes and the axle itself.

Maximum Tow Rating – the manufacturer’s weight limit for towed loads. For conventional trailers, this typically includes a hitch weight limit as well. For fifth wheels, the pin weight is applied to the truck’s gvwr and its rear-axle gawr.

These are just some of the basic terms you’ll come across when beginning your towing adventure. Be sure to talk with your local Jayco dealer or our Customer Service department if you have questions regarding towing.
