Tips and Tricks to Baking in an RV…and a few of our favorites!

Okay, let's talk about baking in our RV oven! Anyone who knows me knows I LOVE to bake. Before moving into our RV, I baked a lot and knew it was something I wasn't going to sacrifice when deciding to travel full-time in our RV. Now that we've been living in our RV for a year and a half, many people ask if we use our oven to bake and cook all the regular things you can in a "sticks and bricks" home. Simple answer, YES!

First off, RV ovens can be incredibly intimidating, but with a few tricks and a little practice you can have great baking results. We are incredibly lucky to have a residential oven in our Jayco North Point. It’s large enough to cook a Thanksgiving turkey! Making it a lot easier when it comes to baking in our RV. For anyone who is new to RV baking, here are a few concepts that can build your confidence as you begin to use your RV oven.

RV ovens have been known for their uneven baking. First, a simple secret to improving efficiency is adding a pizza stone to the bottom shelf of your oven (directly over the heat source). Make sure to preheat your oven with the stone inside.

The stone will distribute the heat and allow for better and more even baking. When purchasing a pizza stone, you will want to know the size of your RV oven. Second, add an oven safe thermometer. You can't always trust the dial; this will be used to get a more accurate internal temperature. Don't judge my oven. The pizza stone never really comes clean, and we make a lot of pizza! Lastly, I make sure to rotate halfway through.

One of the main reasons I truly enjoy baking is the connection it brings with my kids. It is more than the result and makes it worth the mess! Baking with tiny humans can be both fun and educational.

It encourages valuable life skills including math, independence, organization, creativity, patience, self-sufficiency and pride. To make it smooth, choose age-appropriate tasks and keep it simple! It's the experience and learning that's important. Baking has become an important bond between us as a family. It was important for me to share a love for baking with my children. Creating lots of shared experiences and positive memories.

Living in the RV, I can emphasize the joy of sharing our homemade treats. Our kids LOVE sharing the fruits of their labor with our RV friends and neighbors!

So many people told me it was impossible to bake properly in an RV, but together we make all the same things we did in our sticks and bricks home. Here are a few of our favorite things to bake in our RV!  Banana bread and sourdough bread have become weekly staples. Cinnamon rolls are the number one kid-requested breakfast! Jeremy, my husband's favorite is by far my blueberry scones with vanilla glaze. And of course, we make lots of sweets!

Now get to baking and don't limit yourself to what you can bake just because you're living in or vacationing in an RV!

Jeremy and Nicole simply felt that they were missing out on time with their kids. They started yearning for more out of life, more adventure, more time with their kids. They decided they didn't want to wait for "someday" because the raw truth is that life and time are never certain. In November of 2023 they made the decision to sell it all and start their journey as a full-time RV family. RVing has been in and out of their lives since they were children, and they knew they wanted to give their kids similar great memories of RVing.
